BBC's WebWise, is a good starting point.
First visit? Finding your way around
We hope you find it easy to navigate your way around the website. Please send
us any comments or suggestions for improvements by filling out the
feedback form.
The site contains a massive amount of information but is designed to be
flexible enough to work in a way that suits you. If you
register
with the site you can create your own links to pages that you use on a regular
basis. There is a Registration and Personalisation User Guide under
register
for help with this.
We want you to get the best from DGCommunity website, so here are some tips to
help you find your way around the site.
The site can be navigated in a number of ways.
-
the search box, located in the top right hand corner of
each page
-
the menu
bar on the left of each page
-
the a-z search, on specific parts of the site
Using the Search Box
In the top right hand corner of every page, you will find a
search box, containing the words 'Enter search words'
Type a word or phrase that describes what you are searching for
in the search box, and click Go. It is best
to use one or two key words rather than a long sentence.
This will search the entire website looking for a reference to
your keywords. The number of records found during a search is shown under the
search results.
Click on the results found to get more information.
-
10 search results are shown per page
-
It aims to show the highest relevant result by giving you a percentage of
relevance
-
It will indicate whether the item is a web page or a PDF and give a brief
description of the information found
If a search returns a large number of results, you can narrow
your search.
Instead of searching the whole site, you can restrict your
search to one or more of the following:
by clicking on one of the check boxes shown for:
-
Services
-
FAQs
-
MiniWebs
-
Links
-
Documents
-
Headlines
-
Events
-
Places
-
Organisation
You can also choose whether to match
-
All words
-
Any words
-
Exact phrase
If you click on the box marked Find in the title only, this will
bring back a list of results where the subject you searched for appears in the
title of the service, document, organisation etc only and not in the
description.
Once you have set your search criteria, click the search button.
Alternatively, you can use the advanced search option.
-
This allows you to search for up to three specific words or phrases in either
the main body or title or keywords of the search results
-
You can also select whether you want search the whole site or restrict to the
same specific ones listed earlier
-
Select how many results per page you want and arrange them by relevance or date
and with or without a summary
-
Once you have set your search criteria, click the search button
NOTE: the search is not case sensitive so it will not matter if
you use capital letters.
Using the Menu
You can move to different pages by using main categories on the
menu bar on the left of each page. Move your cursor over the buttons and the
button will be highlighted. You can then click your mouse to go to the page
containing the information.
You can also click on the
Home link at the top left of the header, at any stage and you will
return to the home page.
Using the A to Z Search
Some items also have an A - Z that can be searched by clicking
on a letter. This is available for Services, Documents, Places, FAQs, Tell Me
About and MiniWebs.
The A-Z lists the information in alphabetical order. Simply
click on the first initial letter of the service you require. For example, if
you want to find information on planning applications, you may choose to click
on the letter 'P' for planning, or perhaps 'A' for applications.
Paging through results
Sometimes you will
find that there are too many entries to be displayed on a single page. In these
cases each page will be numbered and you can move to and from different pages
by selecting the page from the drop down list.
Once you have found the service (or subject) you are interested
in it will give a general description followed by related information such as
Related Places, Related Services, Related Locations etc. If you click on a
Related Location you will see the details of the facility and also any local
details about the service delivered at that place.
