Mary Smith is based in Castle Douglas, Dumfries & Galloway, and is a writer, poet and journalist. Her poems have won several prizes as well as appearing in various magazines. She is the author of Before the Taliban: Living with War, Hoping for Peace, which provides an insightful portrayal of the daily lives of Afghan women. She is currently working on a poetry collection and a novel, both of which draw on her experiences of living in Afghanistan.

Mary is involved in running creative writing workshops for community groups and in schools, and tutors a disabled writers' group as well as facilitating a Survivors' Poetry group. She is currently studying for an MLitt in Creative Writing at Glasgow University.
