The Ewart Today

The library shares its site with the source of the Loreburn, and problems have been caused by this from the start.  Foundations for the original building had to be 16 feet deep but despite the burn being culverted within the basement area, periodic flooding can still occur when the water table rises to exceptional levels.

The original iron railings on the low sandstone walls to the front of the building are no longer present, having been removed for the war effort, however the original gates into the entrance of the library still remain.

The Ewart Library celebrated its centenary in September 2004 and to mark the occassion library staff with children from the local primary schools dressed up in Edwardian atire and marched along the High Street of Dumfries before returning to the Ewart Library to enjoy a tea party.
