Learning for Work Dumfries and Galloway Adult Literacy and Numeracy Partnership was one of seven organisations in Scotland successful in being awarded funding by the Scottish Executive to develop a framework to support adult literacy and numeracy provision in the workplace. The £133,000 project resulted in the following: 1. The How to Do it for Employers: A practical, step-by-step guide to the process needed for employers to set up a workplace literacies programme. 2. The Workplace Literacies Pack for Employers: A selection of resources to provide practical support for employers who want to tackle literacies issues within their workforce, including assessment tools for the organisation and for learners, and an Employer/Provider Agreement document. 3. The Workplace Literacies Pack for Providers: The pack provides practical support for providers delivering literacies provision in the workplace. 4. A large selection of workplace literacies resources has been purchased and is now available to tutors through Dumfries and Galloway Libraries Service. 5. Accreditation opportunities for learners in the Workplace Core Skills of Communication and Numeracy will be available through Dumfries and Galloway College's Open Learning provision. 6. In order to assess the effectiveness of the materials, two pilot projects are currently being delivered: Solway Structural Steel at Creetown is currently running a programme to improve the numeracy skills of some of their workforce, with the help of the local Community Learning and Development Service. Con Brennan, Production Manager with Solway Structural Steel said: "This guide has proven to assist production and the company's outputs. We've been absolutely delighted to be part of this ground breaking approach and I'm really encouraged to see my staff's confidence and work related skills being enhanced". The other company is Annan based Pinneys of Scotland, who will be offering a programme to improve understanding of company procedures. This course is being delivered by Dumfries and Galloway College. Martin Tilstone of Pinneys commented "The Guide provides a best practice routeway and I feel that it offers the ability to customise and meet our need as a company".
