About Community Planning

Youth with Drinks Caerlaverock Castle
Community Planning is about organisations and communities working together to improve services and quality of life for everyone in the region. It is about involving people in decisions to make services better suited to our local area.

Community Planning is a Scotland-wide initiative dating back to 1997, when a national working group looked at how local councils work in partnership with other agencies in planning and providing services.

With much joint work going on already in Dumfries and Galloway, we adopted the key principle of partnership working with enthusiasm. We agreed that much more can be achieved by statutory and voluntary agencies working together rather than by working alone.

Community Planning provided the ideal framework for this. After wide consultation, partners launched the first Community Plan in December 2000.

The partnership between organisations and members of the wider community in Dumfries and Galloway has enabled the development of a vision and themes to make this way of working succeed. Click on the links to find out more, including who does what and how we check progress in Community Planning.
